Marriage Registration
Instructions
Please review the guidelines carefully to ensure a smooth appointment process.
- In order to register a marriage under the Sri Lankan Law at least one party must be a Sri Lankan.
- The relevant marriage can be registered in Sinhala, English, or Tamil.
- A marriage can be registered under the General Marriage Law, the Kandyan Marriage and Divorce Law, or the Muslim Law.
(A Muslim Registrar must be present to register a marriage under Muslim Law.)
Supporting Documents
- Two (02) separate Affidavits (Unmarried Certificate) given by a parent of both parties in front of a lawyer/Justice of Peace to confirm the present civil status of both. This affidavit should include each parent’s no objection for the proposed marriage.
- If either party is divorced, the Divorced Certificate should be produced
- If either party is widowed, the Death Certificate of the late spouse and previous Marriage Certificate should be produced
- If adopted, the Adoption Certificate should be produced
- Original Birth Certificates of both(English translation are not accepted)
- Valid Passports of both
- Two (02) witnesses with valid Sri Lankan Passports
Note : All above documents except Passports should be duly authenticated by the Consular Affairs Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka.
All names, passport numbers, Identity card numbers should be correctly mentioned in the Unmarried Certificate.
