Bilateral Relations between Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea
Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea enjoy warm, longstanding, and multifaceted relations founded on mutual respect, shared values, and close cooperation. While historical links between the two countries date back to the spread of Buddhism across Asia during the 5th century AD, modern diplomatic relations were formally established on 14 November 1977. Since then, bilateral ties have expanded steadily across political, economic, development, labour, cultural, educational, and people-to-people spheres.
Over nearly five decades of diplomatic relations, Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea have maintained regular high-level exchanges, consultations, and cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels. The relationship continues to be strengthened through reciprocal visits by Heads of State, Ministers, senior government officials, parliamentary delegations, and private sector representatives.
Political dialogue between the two countries is conducted through regular consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and other institutional mechanisms, reflecting the shared commitment to enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Sri Lanka and the Republic of Korea also work closely within regional and international organizations, including the United Nations, to promote peace, sustainable development, and international cooperation.

The Government of Sri Lanka closely cooperates with the Korean authorities to ensure safe, legal, and mutually beneficial labour migration while enhancing skills development and worker welfare.
